Counselling and hypnotherapy for individuals in Glasgow, Clarkston, East Kilbride & online

Welcome, and thank you for visiting NeverMind.

My name is Louise Maughan, and I am a counsellor providing both short- and long-term therapy to adult individuals in The Greenbank Rooms in Glasgow Southside, Clarkston, and East Kilbride. I also offer counselling by telephone or online, using Zoom.

I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Clinical Hypnotherapist, registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and abide by their code of ethics.

I offer a straightforward and supportive approach, I’m here to listen and together we will find ways to overcome challenges and move forward to where you need to be. We will explore what is going on for you and how you want that to change. When you understand where you are coming from, it’s easier to know where you are going. With your commitment, I will walk alongside you, one step at a time, to take back control of what is making you uncomfortable.

I work with clients experiencing anxieties, low mood, loss and bereavement, low self-esteem, relationship challenges, work-related stress, panic attacks and trauma.

I also offer hypnotherapy sessions for smoking cessation, fears/phobias, and confidence building.

How can counselling help?

Life brings many challenges, and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. As a counsellor my role is to provide space and guidance to enable you to examine your life and make new, meaningful choices within it.

I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment, with someone from outside of your day-to-day life. Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and a new understanding of yourself. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice but empowering you to make your own changes.

Feel seen and heard

Counselling takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with me and I will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence. This space is all about you.

Break the cycle

Many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what is causing these problems. Breaking the cycle of unhelpful thinking or behaviours can move towards managing or resolving them.

Shift your thinking and feel real change happen

Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, healthier choices that make a real difference.

More about my approach & qualifications

Working with some of the most vulnerable people in society, made me realise how essential it is for humans to be heard. Especially when we feel most alone.

I decided on a career change and started training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which was like no other study I had done before. I had to look myself straight in the eye and ask myself some tough questions. Afterall, I had to sort my own stuff before I could support anyone else.

I hadn’t realised just how much I had been powering through all of those years, without paying attention to myself or being kind to myself. I hadn’t paid attention to feelings of anxiety or overwhelm. Blamed myself when things went wrong. Worried about what people of thought of me. And thought this was all normal – that’s just me,

I worry or I’m no good at that or they don’t like me. And it was normal. My normal. But, it really didn’t have to be like that. I learned that I could be in control of all of this because it is all in my head.

I applied the theories and techniques I learned to support others, on myself and began to treat myself with understanding and compassion, looking for solutions instead of problems. Only once I had created that space and made a connection with myself, could I be my authentic self and I think I’m good enough!

Studying clinical hypnotherapy was even more of a game changer for me, I thought I had got to the root of the thing, but as my tutor says, ‘the thing is never the thing.’ The subconscious acts to keep us safe, but so many of those behaviours that worked for our younger selves don’t serve us well anymore. Not so much back to the drawing board, but more of a spring clean of unhelpful thoughts, taking the pain out of memories and making them just something that happened and shaped me, but don’t serve me anymore.

I’m here to listen and support with the tools I know will make a difference. I’ve been there, I’ve been here, I’ve been everywhere. Here is best.

One of the main bodies overseeing the accreditation and registration of counsellors in the United Kingdom is the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am a BACP Registered Counsellor, which means I have met their criteria for qualified and experienced therapists and work in accordance with their ethical framework.

It also means that you have access to their complaint’s procedure, for your safety and protection. To maintain my BACP accreditation I undergo at least 30 hours of professional development each year. You can visit the BACP website here.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBT?

CBT aims to help you change the way you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour). Rather than looking at past causes, it focuses on current problems and practical solutions to help you feel better now.

The way we think about situations affects the way we feel and behave. If we view a situation negatively, we may experience negative emotions and feelings which lead us to behave in an unhelpful way. Your therapist will help you identify and challenge any negative thinking so you can deal with situations better and behave in a more positive way

CBT can be helpful for depression, anxiety, stress, phobias, obsessions, eating disorders and managing long term conditions.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a skilled communication aimed at directing a person’s imagination in a way that helps elicit changes in some perceptions, sensations, feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.

In a typical hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist and client will discuss the intended alterations or therapeutic goals desired. The hypnotherapist will ask questions about previous medical history, general health, and lifestyle to decide on the best approach for the individual.

Hypnotherapy may be found to be helpful for those seeking relief from a range of problems and is used alongside a person’s own willpower and motivation to seek a desired goal. It is often used to help relieve anxiety, aid sleeping, help to address bedwetting, address attitudes to weight, and help clients achieve behavioural change to stop smoking. It may also help with minor skin conditions that are exacerbated by stress and confidence issues and may also be used to enhance performance in areas such as sport and public speaking.

Hypnotherapy may help people to cope with and manage the relief of perceived pain.

Hypnotherapy has also been used with both adults and children to help manage the pain associated with irritable bowel. There is evidence to support its use in this condition for both adults and children and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Guidance (NICE) recommends the NHS should consider referring patients for hypnotherapy if their irritable bowel is persistent and has failed to respond to simple prescribed medicine.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

I aim to offer you a free 20-minute online, consultation appointment, within 1 week,  and our first assessment session within 1-2 weeks.

However, waiting times will vary according to pressure on my resources, your own availability, and the service you seek.

Will everything I say be kept confidential?

Confidentiality is one of the main ways in which therapy differs from many other forms of helping - for example, talking to friends or family can rarely offer the same degree of confidentiality as talking to a counsellor. Because of this confidentiality, you will find that - as you get used to coming for therapy - you are freer to talk about whatever you wish to.

As a member of BACP I am bound by their Ethical Framework to protect a client’s confidentiality. Therefore, everything that we discuss is confidential except in certain circumstances, which are listed below. Where possible we will discuss the need for the below.

  • Where you give consent for the confidence to be broken.
  • When compelled by a court of law.
  • Where information is of such gravity that confidentiality cannot be maintained – e.g., where there is a possibility of serious physical harm to yourself or others involved, including children.
